Drum & Bass Production Tutoring - How Much Does It Cost?
How Much Does 1 on 1 Production Tutoring Cost?
If you're looking at getting production tutoring, it's likely one of the first questions that will cross your mind will be "how much does it cost?"
In this article, we'll cover what costs you might expect & how to make a decision if it's worth your hard earned money.
So, how much does it actually cost?
Across the 1 on 1 production tutoring industry, price ranges vary based on 3 key factors.
Session duration
Multi-session packages
Tutor credibility & reputation
After conducting research on all of the main suppliers of 1 on 1 tutoring including: Inverse Audio, DnB Academy, Education & Bass, Amoss, Fanu, FaderPro, Superprof, Fiverr, Preply, Surgical Sounds, Heist & our own pricing, here are the price ranges converted into 3 different currencies.
Budget Freelance Tutors (Superprof, Fiverr, Preply):
Lower Pricing Average- £15GBP, $20USD, $35NZD (p/hr)
Higher Pricing Average - £40GBP, $53USD, $92NZD (p/hr)
Mid-Range DnB Specialists (Inverse Audio, Education & Bass)
Low - £40GBP, $53USD, $92NZD (p/hr)
High - £60GBP, $80USD, $138NZD (p/hr)
Premium Named Artist Tutoring (Amoss, Fanu, Surgical Sounds, Heist)
Low - £50GBP, $67USD, $115NZD (p/hr)
High - £100GBP, $133USD, $231NZD (p/hr)
Unfortunately most premium artist tutors & DnB Academy keep their pricing behind enquiry forms, so the research results were based on community reports (reddit, Dogs On Acid).
So, who should I choose?
I'm a firm believer that you pay for what you get. Whilst some of the budget freelance tutors will be able to deliver tutoring at a relatively low cost, it's unlikely they will be able to give you the high-level practical knowledge that the premium named artists could.
That said, your skill level should also factor into who you choose. If you're a complete beginner, working with a premium artist who focuses on intermediate to advanced producers could mean you struggle to keep up. However, if they explicitly offer beginner-level sessions and you can afford them, their reputation alone should give you confidence that you're in competent hands.
So, how much should I spend?
When you're trying to decide on how much you're willing to spend, the number should be significant enough that it feels like an investment, but doesn't cause you stress. You don't want to invest below your means & regret that the sessions aren't good enough but you also don't want to invest above your means & spend money you need.
How do I make sure I get value for money?
Before engaging any tutors, have a think about exactly what you want to achieve. This could be improving your mix downs, learning sound design techniques, understanding mastering or just the art of finishing music*. Make sure you tell the tutor what it is you'd like to learn, so you're both aligned on the objectives.
This way, you'll be able to actually measure whether or not the tutoring has been worth the money.
*If you don't know exactly what it is you need to focus on, any good tutor will be able to help you identify your weaknesses & cater the sessions accordingly.
Another way you can get better value for money is asking about multi-session packages. Some artists & companies may off you a discounted rate if you purchase a bunch of sessions at once. Often you can save 10 to 20 dollars an hour this way.
How do I make sure I don't get scammed?
Once you've short-listed some tutors, make sure you do some research on their credibility & reputation as a tutor. Look up their Spotify/Soundcloud/Apple Music profiles and listen to the quality of their music. Is it produced to a high level? Have they released music recently?
Most importantly, seek out independent reviews from places like Reddit, TrustPilot & other social media platforms. Sometimes it's hard to tell if reviews on main websites are legit, so these platforms are a great place to look.
I hope this article has given you some insight into how much production tutoring costs & how you can ensure you get the most value for your money. If you're unsure about the credibility of any companies or tutors, feel free to send me an email & I'll let you know if they're legit.
Max.
